Keyboard shortcuts & quick actions

Three shortcuts are always one action away, so the things you do constantly never need a trip through the menus: the search field at the top of the screen, the Quick actions menu beside it, and — if you belong to more than one practice — a practice switcher at the foot of the sidebar.

The top bar — with the search field and Quick actions — shows on laptop- and desktop-width windows. On a narrower window, such as a phone or most tablets, it gives way to a compact header with just the menu button and your account menu, so these two shortcuts aren’t available there.

Search happens right in the top bar: the field reads “Find a patient by name or record #” and shows the ⌘K hint. Press ⌘K (or Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux) from anywhere to jump to it, or just click it. Results appear in a panel under the field as you type — there is no separate pop-up window. Press Esc or click elsewhere to hide the results; what you typed stays in the field.

  • Patients are matched the way the roster matches them. Type a patient’s name — first, last, full, or just the first three or more letters — or their record number. Matches are listed under Patients. Matching is on the start of a name, so a misspelling won’t match; if nothing comes back you’ll see “Nothing matched. Try the first few letters of a name, a full name, or a record number.”
  • Pages are matched too. The same field jumps you to a page under a “Go to” heading, so you can reach a screen without leaving the keyboard.

The Quick actions menu opens from the + button at the top right of the screen — rest the pointer on it or click it. It is a shortcut to the additive actions you reach for most:

  • Add birth
  • Add patient
  • Record a procedure
  • Import births

Below a separator, the menu also opens the EDD & GA calculator, so you can date a pregnancy mid-conversation from any page. See EDD & GA calculator.

Quick actions is available to roles that can write records (Admin and Provider). The read-only Viewer and write-only Scribe roles don’t see it — a Scribe records births from its own single Record a birth surface instead. See the four roles.

Your current practice’s name sits at the foot of the sidebar. If you belong to more than one practice, that name is the practice switcher: click it to choose which practice you are acting in, and everything else — patients, births, statistics — then reflects that practice. For a single-practice account the name is a plain label with nothing to switch. If you were invited into a practice but don’t own one yet, the switcher also offers Start your own practice.
